Viking island of Berk ruled by Hiccup’s dad, Stoick the Vast (Robert Morgan).ĭirected by Nigel Jamieson from his adaptation of Will Davies, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders’ film version (itself from Cressida Cowell’s book series), the “Dragon” arena show uses every visual, artistic and technological element at its disposal to bring the animated film convincingly to life.Įach burst of flame from a dragon’s mouth generates heat that can be felt many rows back, while fast-moving animated scenery creates the illusion of running or flying over vast expanses of land or sea – or falling from terrifying heights. The show, which originanted in Australia, alights upon the Honda Center through Sunday and is indeed a spectacle in every sense of the word, with ponderous, impressively lifelike and often terrifying dragons, eye-filling visual and special effects, and a human cast that uses every ounce of agility and athleticism it can muster to keep up with the staging’s rigors.Īt the show’s heart is the relationship between Hiccup (Riley Miner), a Viking teenager considered a misfit, and a rare, youthful breed of dragon known as a “night fury.” In “Androcles and the Lion” fashion, Hiccup befriends the dragon, heals his damaged tail wing, and names him “Toothless.”Ĭalling a dragon his best friend only gets the boy into trouble, though, for dragons are considered the scourge of the 333 A.D. If one could imagine a live arena spectacular show that combines the state-of-the-art animatronics of “Walking With Dinosaurs” with the script, story, characters and music of the 2010 DreamWorks film “How to Train Your Dragon,” the result would, of course, be called “DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular.” ![]()
